     Dr. Alvin B. Culaba is a University Fellow, full professor of the Mechanical Engineering Department; and Director of Center for Sustainable Development Research and Linkage, Training and Consultancy. His areas of specialization include: energy technology and management, life cycle assessment, management of technology, manufacturing and environmental system engineering, and cleaner production technologies. He finished Doctor of Philosophy in Mechanical Engineering from the University of Portsmouth, England and Master of Engineering from the Asian Institute of Technology, Bangkok. He obtained his Bachelor of Science in Mechanical Engineering from Leyte Institute of Technology.

"With Ruby-Pineda Henson of the Department of Industrial Engineering, Holy Angel University-Angeles City, Philippines as co author, this power point presentation provides how the potential of expert system technology is explored to develop a diagnostic software prototype that emulates how human experts diagnose Green Productivity (GP) of manufacturing processes. The use of Life Cycle Assessment (LCA) methodology as the technical framework supports a systematic approach to GP analysis and rationalizes the structure of the knowledge base that spans inventory analysis, impact assessment and improvement assessment. The Analytic Hierarchy Process (AHP) provides a tool for decision modeling, for weighting or valuation of environmental impacts and prioritizing improvement options relative to these impacts in a continuous improvement strategy resulting to measures of GP performance."

"With Ruby-Pineda Henson, of the Dept. of Industrial Engineering, Holy Angel University-Angeles City, Philippines as co author, this article presents green productivity assessment of manufacturing processes. This study concludes that green productivity (GP) provides an open framework that can incorporate several strategies for sustainable manufacturing. The GP assessment methodology and computerized diagnostic prototype may be utilized as an internal management or self-assessment tool by companies in their continuous improvement strategies. The application of expert system technology is particularly appropriate to provide flexibility in testing assumptions and in preserving human expertise on green productivity program implementation. Enhancements may be made in future versions with a more comprehensive scope to include other pertinent life cycle stages, consider impact characterization differentiated into global, regional and local conditions and applicability on different industries when reliable databases become available. The GP diagnostic software may be integrated with some optimization software for improving industry performance."

Drive cycle development for tricycles

"Co authored by J. B. Manuel M. Biona of the Center for Research and Training, Don Bosco Technical College, Mandaluyong City, Philippines, this article presents the drive cycle development for tricycles. The absence of protocols through which an alternative technology for two stroke tricycles could be evaluated makes it difficult to compare these technologies and determine the best alternative. This study demonstrates the process of the development of a dynamometer test cycle that would be reflective of the actual driving conditions in Metro Manila. The development of such test cycle would be vital to the development of emission factors. The study covers the gathering of actual speed-time data, development of the instrumentation device for the said activity, analysis of the data gathered and extraction of a test cycle. Results were compared to the Indian drive cycle to demonstrate the inappropriateness of adapting drive cycles derived from other areas."

"Written with Raymond R. Tan, of the Chemical Engineering Department, De La Salle University - Manila, this article presents life-cycle assessment (LCA) as a methodology for analyzing the environmental interactions of a technological system with the environment. Early forms of LCA were used in the United States in the late 1960s for defining corporate environmental strategy, and later in the 1970s by government agencies as an aid for developing public policy. In the late 1990s, LCA emerged as a worldwide environmental management tool in the form of the ISO 14040 series. Despite relatively limited use in the Philippines, there is considerable potential for its utilization in both public and private sectors. For example, LCA can be used to assess different technologies in order to identify the best environmental option; alternatively, it can be used to provide a scientific basis for developing sound environmental strategies and policies in government or industry. Current LCA resources in the Philippines are limited, but in the past decade De La Salle University - Manila has gradually developed the capacity to engage in scientific research, technical consultancy and training in this field. A description of some current projects undertaken by the LCA research group is given."
